Yakking with Yante: Episode 3: Interview with Coach Russo

DY: What inspired you to open The HUB Houston?

Coach: Ms. Krause and I began planning The HUB in the summer of 2015. We recognized a significant gap in programs available for young adults with neurological differences once they graduated from high school. Driven by this unmet need, we envisioned creating a solution. Initially, the goal was to establish a Life 101 program, but the idea quickly evolved.

DY: How would you describe being a founder and leader of The HUB? What was it like in the early years?

Coach: The first few years felt like a dream come true. Every day, I found myself amazed, thinking, "Is this really happening?" As we connected with interested parents, the concept expanded to include not just Life 101 but also a high school program and Club HUB. With incredible community support, we launched The HUB in just five weeks! The Hodges family generously purchased the Galway property, providing the perfect space to bring our vision to life—a space we still cherish today. Families contributed furniture, appliances, and supplies, often without prompting. Reflecting on those early days still gives me chills; it was nothing short of a miracle that brought together the most extraordinary school and programs imaginable.

DY: How would you describe your experience working with neurodiverse students?

Coach: Working with neurodiverse students has been deeply rewarding. They are determined, loving, loyal, and forgiving. Their resilience in overcoming challenges that many take for granted is truly inspiring. This work has also given me a better understanding of my own ADHD, showing me the importance of embracing strengths while continuing to address areas of growth. My relationships with our HUBsters are profoundly meaningful, and I treasure them all.

DY: Did you attend college before working at Monarch and The HUB? If so, where?

Coach: Yes, I attended Queens College in New York City.

DY: How did you establish partnerships with organizations like Jessie’s Bites, Rocambolesc, and Smith and Associates?

Coach: At The HUB, we pride ourselves on being relationship-driven. We’re constantly seeking partnerships that align with our mission and values. By fostering kindness, honesty, and sharing our incredible programs, we’ve been fortunate to attract organizations that are drawn to The HUB’s valuable mission and vision.

DY: Do you believe The HUB has succeeded in staying true to its mission?

Coach: Absolutely. Our growth and community support speak volumes about our success. We began with just 24 families on the Galway campus, and today, we have 72 families and we operate three campuses and four remarkable programs.

DY: What inspired you to become a special needs teacher?

Coach: I wanted to advocate for those who face challenges advocating for themselves. I deeply believe that every person deserves to be heard, understood, and supported. Everyone has the capacity to learn and should be treated with respect and love throughout their journey. Over the past 27 years, the young people I’ve worked with have profoundly impacted my life, shaping how I see the world and inspiring me daily.

DY: What led to the creation of programs like Life 101, Club HUB, and Aspire?

Coach: Life 101 was part of our original vision. The high school program emerged after families expressed interest in including their children in our plans. We also recognized the need for a social opportunity for young adults over 18, leading to the creation of Club HUB, a safe and fun space for peers to connect—even for those not enrolled in our day programs. Aspire Accessories became part of The HUB when Ms. Denise Hazen approached us with the idea. She saw that our missions aligned, and Aspire has been an incredible addition.

DY: What are your plans for The HUB over the next 10 years?

Coach: Our Board is actively discussing The HUB’s future. While we aim to continue growing, we’re committed to staying true to our mission. Maintaining a close-knit community where we know each member and family personally is vital to our success. As we navigate challenges like physical space and location, we’ll ensure our focus remains on supporting the growth of each young person through strong, collaborative teams.

DY: How do you feel about The HUB reaching its 10-year milestone?

Coach: I couldn’t be prouder of what The HUB has become. Our dedicated staff and faculty genuinely love our young people and see the immense potential they bring to the world. They also support one another, creating a family-like atmosphere. It brings me immense pride and joy to share The HUB with our community and supporters.
